The title of this blog comes from a quote in one of my all-time favorite films, the 2009 Korean dramedy Castaway on the Moon. After enduring some drawn out struggles to survive, the protagonist finally manages to catch and eat some fish and then even a bird, and then he lies down in the grass, satisfied and staring up at the sky without worries or responsibilities, in direct contrast to the opening of the film.
What an evocative description of that moment: one of perfect boredom. I don’t often get bored, but to slow down like that, to be open to the experience – when you might as well be on a desert island – that’s exactly the perfect mood to watch movies. When you focus not on your own cravings, but on whatever flavor the food in front of you has to offer – well, that’s the exactly kind of disposition that makes jjajangmyun taste like the best food in the world.
